Everyone waits in anticipation as the Kanto poles rise into the air. Flutes, drums, cheers from the crowd encourage the performers to do their best. At the very top of the 15 meter poles are the Gohei-the prayers or wishes.

This festival originated to drive away the evil spirits, purify the people's minds, and pray for a good harvest. Now, while all that is still there, the 'show' is the amazing performers who keep the paper lanterns balanced - no matter what the wind - and moving it from hand to forehead to lower back.
