Matsuri Yatai in Himeji

Sunday, June 1, 2008

Yatai are huge wooden floats carried by about 100 men in loin cloths. In Himeji this is a festival that is not religious, but an event especially for tourists. The yatai are thrown up into the air to the shouts of the men. (This is no easy task as they weigh about 2000 pounds.) The yatai are carried down the main street and gather in front of Himeji Castle.
