Wimborne Model Town - Photographed by John Filkins

Around 60 years ago a group of the local men amazingly built this model town just after the Second World War. Not only was it a magnificent achievement in model making, but also when you consider the life and times of the post war period in rural England, it is quite staggering how they went about the task of creating a replica of the town of Wimbourne of that time.

Its Minster, churches, shops and houses, now repositioned and lovingly maintained by a dedicated group of highly skilled volunteers. When you look at the shop windows that’s content is regularly cleaned updated and replaced in such detail and the wedding party and all to scale you understand why I say highly skilled. (See bookshop picture of window access)

This group of photos forms a very small glimpse of the whole model town. On a visit to the town proper today one can still find some of the shops and building that they duplicated all those years ago and of course Wimborne Minster.

The Minster is worthy of further research by you, of it historic background and its Chained library.
