Gluskabe and the Four Wishes

Grade 2, Cashman School, Amesbury, Massachusetts


Gluskabe wanted to be the magic hunter. He tried as hard as he could. Gluskabe hunted to kill the monster that wanted to keep the water to himself. The monster that Gluskabe killed wanted to keep all the water to himself was very ruthless.

He used a canoe to kill the monster. Gluskabe was kind by slaying the monster and granting wishes to anyone who came to him.

Gluskabe went to an island. Gluskabe sailed to a far away island because he wanted to rest.

There were four Abenaki that wanted to see Gluskabe. There were four men who went to see Gluskabe. The four men went over the sea to go to Gluskabe for a wish. They zoomed through the sea to get to Gluskabe The men could smell the smoke from Gluskabe’s pipe. Each man was granted one wish. Gluskabe gave each man a pouch.

Gluskabe sent them off with a warning. They knew not to open the pouch before they got home. The men were excited to open their pouch. They opened the pouch before they go to the lodge. The men thought the wishes were jammed in the pouches.

Three men used the pouch before they got to their lodge.

The man who wanted many things opened his pouch in the canoe; everything a man could ever want was inside, spears, necklaces and swords. The canoe was too heavy. He yelled when the canoe was sinking. The first man who wanted many things drowned in the canoe.

The second man wanted to be the tallest man in the world. The second man was vain because he cared about how he looked. The one that wanted to be the tallest thinks there is ointment in the pouch. The man who wanted to be the tallest turned into a tree.

The third man wanted to live forever and turned into a boulder and remained unchanged. He did live forever but he wasn’t happy. The man turned into a boulder because he opened up the pouch before he got to his lodge.

The fourth man realized that his pouch was empty when he was in his lodge. In the lodge it was quiet. He opened the pouch then he heard voices. The fourth man got to his lodge and opened his pouch and it was empty. He heard animals talking to him. The fourth man got back to his lodge and opened his pouch. He heard animals talking to him and telling him how he can hunt for food to feed his family and village.
