The Little Red Hen

Grade 2, Westdale School - Northlake, Illinois

by Margot Zemach
Ms. Zwicker’s 2nd Grade Class

Once upon a time there was a little red hen. In the cottage lived the chicks and the little red hen. One day, the little red hen was walking with her friends and she found a few grains of wheat. She asked the goose, cat, and pig if they will help her. The goose, cat, and pig said no. The little red hen said to the cat, pig, and cow, “I will do it myself.”

Time passed and the little red hen said, “Oh, look, the grains have sprouted.”

Then the little red hen asked this question, “Who will harvest this wheat?” Again, none of her friends said they would help her. Little red hen said, “I’ll harvest the wheat.” She harvested the wheat.

Then it was time to thresh the wheat. Little red hen asked her friends if they would help, and again they said no. The little red hen threshed the wheat. She did a very good job with the wheat.

Then the little red hen ground the flour. After it was all done, the little red hen asked her friends if they will help her bake the bread. They said no once again.

Just the red hen baked it all by herself. Little red hen cooked in the kitchen with her young chicks. When the red hen put the bread in the oven then it was ready.

She said who wants to eat this bread.

“I will!” said the goose.

“I will!” said the cat.

“I will!” said the pig. Pig never did anything, but he wanted to eat the loaf of bread that little red hen made.

She said, “Oh, no”. The little red hen said now I’ll eat it myself. She did everything by herself. The little red hen planted, harvested, and baked the wheat. Each of the animals did not do anything but the little red hen. Little red hen was eXtraordinary because she did everything by herself. She was a zealous worker!
