Owl Eyes

Grade 2, Oak Ridge School, Palos Hills

By Yoshi Miyake

Rowena, Master of All Spirits and Everything Maker is making the woodlands, the trees, and all the woodland creatures. He makes the creatures from clay. He asks the unfinished creatures to decide their color and how they wish to be. Roweno gives each creature a name. Roweno makes a fox. The owl tells him he should make the fox yellow like the sun. Next, Roweno makes a sparrow. Owl say he should make sparrow with a longer beak. Roweno ignores owl and goes on with his work. Then Roweno makes a squirrel with jaws big enough to hold nuts. Owl says that he should have longer ears. Roweno glares at owl. Roweno makes a chipmunk and owl says that the chipmunk should have polka dots. Roweno scowls at owl. Roweno is kind to the other animals but is getting frustrated with owl’s interfering. He is losing his patience. Roweno puts owl on his worktable and asks, “How would you like to be?” Owl can’t decide. First, he says he wants red feather like the cardinal. Then, he says he wants blue feathers like a blue jay. Finally, he says he wants to be covered in fur. Roweno gets very angry and hurls owl onto a branch of a tree. Roweno tells owl to face the other way and be quiet. Roweno goes back to work creating the woodland creatures. But owl keeps interrupting Rowena as he works. Roweno is eXtremely angry with owl’s behavior. Roweno stuffs owl’s head into his body. He shakes him so his eyes open wide. He yanks both ears until they stand up straight. Roweno dunks owl in the mud so his feather are brown. Roweno makes owl be awake only at night so he doesn’t bother anyone anymore. Roweno lets owl go. Owl zooms deep into the forest. Roweno is then able to finish the rest of the creatures in peace.
