The Water Story

Retold by the K-2 GATS group
Dural Public School, Sydney, Australia

This is a DREAMTIME story.

There was once a lizard called BANGARRA, a tiny MOUSE called GALU, a short nosed bandicoot, a POSSUM and a swallow.

They all lived in the dry times a long time ago.

There wasn't much water then.

The lizard was VERY sly and sneaky. He hid his WATER UNDER a big, flat stone and he NEVER shared.

The OTHER ANIMALS had to chew the MOISTURE out of the KANGAROO GRASS (called GULBIRA) when they were THIRSTY

The animals felt sad and a bit ANGRY.

So they DECIDED to follow Bangarra, the blue tongue lizard.  It was time to find out where the water was hidden. The short-nosed bandicoot and the possum tried to FOLLOW Bangarra, but he was too CLEVER.  They were too big and the lizard spotted them.

So the little mouse, called GALU, hid on the right side of the lizard's tail.  When the lizard looked to the right the mouse QUICKLY HOPPED to his left side. When the lizard looked to the LEFT the mouse JUMPED to the right.

So Bangarra kept going to his water.

He slid the stone off the waterhole.

Then the small mouse sprang out and  YELLED out "Wonderful!, Wonderful!" "We found the WATER!"

The swallow heard the mouse and he SWOOPED down low to the water and gathered it in his beak and then he dropped it over the dry parts of the world making creeks and RIVERS. EVERYONE was happy then, except Bangarra.

We should always share with people in need unless you want to feel left out and end up leading a life like Bangarra.
