Water-lily

Barcaldine State School - Queensland, Australia
Teacher: Alison Fleming-Leach, Principal Tim Adsett

Long ago in China there lived a young girl named Water-lily. She lived with her father in a village at the bottom of a mountain. Everyday Water-lily sang songs in the fields as she worked for survival.

One day a terrible drought came. There was months of no rain. The crops died and the people went hungry. It was up to Water-lily to save her village.

As there was no rain Water-lily had to go up the mountain everyday to cut bamboo. She used the bamboo to make brooms. The brooms were then sold at the markets.

One day Water-lily climbed higher than she had ever been before. She saw a blue lake and thought it might be Wild Goose Lake. Water-lily wanted to find a way to get the water to her village.

While she was wondering about he lake a feathery goose flew by and told her she needed to find the golden key that would open the mountainside and then she could get water for her village. So Water-lily set off to find the golden key.

As Water-lily went along thinking about the message from the goose she found a parrot squawking in a tree. The parrot told her she must find the Dragon King's daughter as she is the only one who can help.

Water-lily continued on her way until she saw a peacock. She asked him where to find the Dragon King's daughter. The peacock told her that the Dragon King's daughter loved music and to go to the highest peak of the mountain and sing songs for her.

She did as she was told. On the first day she sang of snowy tops and blue skies. On the second day she sang of waterfalls and green grass near the brooks and streams. On the third day she sang of spring flowers, summer crops and autumn fruits.

Suddenly there stood the Dragon King's daughter. She immediately wanted to know where water-lily has come from. Water-lily told her who she was, about the suffering of her people and her need for the golden key.

The Dragon King's daughter wanted to help but she was afraid of her father. She told Water-lily that the Dragon King hides the golden key in a treasure chamber but it is guarded by and eagle.

The Dragon King's daughter helped Water-lily by luring the eagle away with her songs. While the eagle was being lured away Water-lily was able to slip into the cave to get the key.

Once inside Water-lily searched high and low until in despair just before leaving she accidentally kicked over a casket and the golden key fell out. She quickly grabbed the key and ran out of the cave where she found the Dragon King's daughter waiting.

Together they ran near the edge of Wild Goose Lake and with the golden key opened the gateway to allow the water to rush down.

The force of the water was eXtremely strong and threatened to put the village in danger. The Dragon King's daughter told Water-lily to throw her bamboo in the water. While she did this the Dragon King's daughter yelled out in a strange tongue. The bamboo shoot grew and grew until the water flow reduced.

The raging river then turned into a gentle stream that flowed peacefully among the rocks and mountainside.

When the Dragon King found the empty casket he was very upset and called for his daughter. The Dragon King's daughter confesses what she had done and her father turned her out of the family home forever.

The Dragon King's daughter then zipped over to the village to live with Water-lily. They spent their days singing songs about the mountain folk they loved and the village never suffered from drought again.
